Local Leadership and Community Advocacy Moving Accessibility Forward
Yesterday morning marked an important step forward for accessibility in Arab, Alabama. Our founder met with Mayor Bob Joslin and Economic Developer Melissa Cook to discuss several concerns raised by residents, particularly regarding sidewalk conditions and handicap parking enforcement throughout the city. Both leaders were warm, welcoming, and demonstrated genuine commitment to improving accessibility for all who live in or visit Arab.
South Main Street Sidewalk Improvements
The City of Arab has already begun exploring grant opportunities to repair or replace sidewalks along South Main Street. This area has been a long‑standing concern for many residents, and we are encouraged to see proactive movement toward a long‑term solution.
Cullman Road / Highway 69 Sidewalk Concerns
Sidewalks along Cullman Road and Highway 69 fall under state responsibility. We will be emailing photos of their current condition to Melissa Cook, who will forward them to the appropriate state contacts. The Corina Mae Foundation will also send a direct communication to ensure these issues receive proper attention and follow‑through.
Strengthening Handicap Parking Enforcement
The city is currently reviewing options for a new ordinance that would strengthen enforcement of handicap parking regulations. This is a meaningful step toward ensuring that accessible parking is protected and respected throughout Arab.
A Shared Commitment to Accessibility
Mayor Joslin expressed that he was impressed with what we are building and looks forward to working with us as we continue addressing accessibility concerns. The Corina Mae Foundation will keep gathering photos, citizen statements, and firsthand accounts to share with city leadership. Our goal is to support improvements that benefit not only our disabled community, but all residents and visitors who rely on safe, accessible public spaces.
