With today’s heat index in Huntsville climbing near 107°F - and yesterday reaching 101°F - the first concern on our founder’s mind was the safety of our homeless neighbors. More than 200 individuals are currently living unsheltered in Huntsville, and with local shelters and nonprofits stretched thin, the rising temperatures pose a serious risk.

A call to recognize the unseen barriers and rebuild accessibility across all 67 counties

Every July, people across the United States come together to celebrate Disability Pride Month — a time dedicated to honoring disabled identity, amplifying disabled voices, and recognizing the strength, resilience, and diversity within the disability community. For The Corina Mae Foundation, this month holds special meaning as we work toward building a future where disabled individuals in Alabama are supported, included, and empowered.

Twenty‑seven years ago today, a woman who had already buried three children, a woman who had been told she would never carry a baby to term, a woman whose heart had been shattered more times than anyone should endure… went into labor with me.

As we close out May and step into June, I want to share the goals we’ve set for the month ahead. June is a meaningful month for me personally — it marks 5 years and 6 months since my mother’s passing, falling the day before my birthday. Her strength and love continue to guide every step we take as a foundation.

Across Alabama, many organizations work hard to support people with disabilities — from legal advocacy to housing assistance and vocational training. These services are essential. But there’s a missing piece that often goes unaddressed:

Memorial Day is a day of quiet reflection — a day when our country pauses to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives in service. Their courage is woven into the freedoms we live with every day, and their sacrifice is felt in the hearts of the families who loved them, raised them, and now carry their memory forward.

This month, we started building the foundation of what The Corina Mae Foundation will become. Not just the structure of a nonprofit — but the heart, the clarity, and the purpose behind it. As we enter the last week of May, I wanted to share the progress we’ve made and the steps that are helping shape our future.

At The Corina Mae Foundation, we’re building something meaningful for families across Alabama — a clear, welcoming, county‑by‑county guide to disability resources. This project is growing every week, and today we’re excited to share an update on the counties that have been added so far, along with information about the counties that rely entirely on statewide programs.

The Corina Mae Foundation was created to honor the life and legacy of Corina Mae Thompson (Soares), a mother whose courage, humor, and unwavering love carried her through a lifetime of disability. She faced barriers that should never have existed, yet she met each one with dignity. Her life taught us that disability is not a limitation — it is a lived experience that deserves understanding, respect, and compassion.
