Domestic Violence Awareness Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic violence impacts every community - but for disabled individuals, the barriers to safety, independence, and support are often even greater.

Too often, survivors with disabilities feel trapped: shelters may be inaccessible, transportation limited, communication supports unavailable, and resources scarce. These gaps leave many without the practical means to leave violent situations, forcing them to endure harm in silence and isolation.

At The Corina Mae Foundation, we believe no one should be left behind in the fight against violence. Every survivor deserves accessible, compassionate pathways to safety, dignity, healing, and long-term stability.

This October, we stand with disabled survivors and call our community to:

Recognize the hidden and often overlooked violence disabled individuals face.

Advocate for accessible shelters, services, transportation, and crisis response.

Support organizations working to break down barriers to safety and recovery.

Domestic violence awareness must include disability awareness. Together, we can ensure survivors are not only seen but heard, believed, and supported.

Accessible support also means listening to survivors as experts in their own needs and experiences. From sign language interpretation and trauma-informed care to accessible communication, adaptive housing, and reliable transportation, services must be designed with disability inclusion at every step. When communities invest in these essential supports, they help ensure that every survivor can seek safety, access care, and rebuild their life without facing additional barriers or being turned away.
