Every movement begins with a story — and ours begins with a woman whose strength shaped everything we believe in.
The Corina Mae Foundation was created to honor the life and legacy of Corina Mae Thompson (Soares), a mother whose courage, humor, and unwavering love carried her through a lifetime of disability. She faced barriers that should never have existed, yet she met each one with dignity. Her life taught us that disability is not a limitation — it is a lived experience that deserves understanding, respect, and compassion.
This foundation exists because her story deserves to spark change.
A mission rooted in lived experience
The work we do is not theoretical. It’s personal. It’s real. It’s shaped by years of navigating a world that often-misunderstood disability — and by the belief that Alabama can be better, kinder, and more inclusive.
We built this foundation to:
-
Uplift disabled voices so lived experience leads the way
-
Challenge stigma through education and awareness
-
Connect families to the resources and support they deserve
-
Advocate for accessibility and dignity across our state
-
Build community where disabled individuals feel seen, valued, and understood
This is not just a mission. It’s a promise.
Why this work matters now
Across Alabama, too many disabled individuals and families still feel invisible. They face barriers to care, misunderstanding in their communities, and systems that weren’t built with them in mind.
We believe that change begins with listening — truly listening — to the people who live these experiences every day. When we understand, we grow. When we grow, we create a state where disability is met with compassion, not judgment.
This foundation is our way of helping Alabama take that step forward.
A legacy that continues
Corina Mae taught us that strength is quiet, steady, and deeply human. She showed us that love can be a form of advocacy. And she reminded us that every person — disabled or not — deserves to be treated with dignity.
Her legacy lives on in every story we share, every family we support, and every voice we amplify.
Join us as we begin this journey
This is just the beginning. In the months ahead, we’ll share stories, resources, education, and ways to get involved. We’ll highlight the realities disabled Alabamians face — and the hope that grows when communities come together.
If you believe in dignity, compassion, and inclusion, you’re already part of this movement.
Welcome to The Corina Mae Foundation.
We’re glad you’re here.
